Leader Pipelines

Leader pipelines offer a potentially transformative framework for districts to think and act systemically to build internal coherence.

Pipeline districts that engaged in restructuring and realigning their leader development system:

• No longer reported struggling to find highly qualified candidates to fill school vacancies.

• Saw their university partners produce more candidates who were highly qualified and who felt better prepared to be instructional leaders.

• Were more likely to retain their principals for at least two or three years compared with newly placed principals in comparison schools.

• Saw positive effects on math and reading achievement.

PSA also produced reports analyzing ways to use data in principal placement and succession planning and the feasibility of sustaining a pipeline.
